What to Consider before your Mastectomy

Along with providing world-class breast reconstruction surgeries, the Aesthetic & Reconstructive Breast Center also offers patients the option to have their breast reconstruction procedure at the time of mastectomy, also known as Immediate Reconstruction. Many women decide to have their reconstruction performed simultaneously, which removes the need for a second major operation and allows for only one period of recovery.

Whenever possible, nipple-sparing mastectomy, where the nipple and breast skin are preserved during the mastectomy, should be performed. In this case, the aesthetic outcome from the mastectomy, combined with reconstruction, is superior.

Autologous or Reconstruction with Implant

After your mastectomy, you may choose to undergo an autologous reconstruction or reconstruction with an implant. Patients commonly select autologous breast reconstruction surgery, also known as the Perforator Flap, in which the breasts are rebuilt using existing fatty tissue from another part of your body, usually the abdomen, thighs, or buttock area. Patients who have undergone autologous breast reconstruction surgery after a mastectomy say that their new breasts look and feel just like the old ones. By comparison to breast reconstruction with implants, there is usually no need for multiple revisions and future implant replacement surgery when choosing autologous options. However, reconstruction with implants can feel natural and provide a beautiful result.

Your best option for breast reconstruction surgery is highly dependent upon your body and specific needs. Contact us to schedule a visit with Dr. Sadeghi to discuss your options and find the procedure that is right for you.
